Grace Christian Academy Wishes Parents and
Students a Happy New Year

Dear GCA Parents:                                                  January/February 2012

Happy New Year to you!  Christmas is a special holiday for us at
Grace Christian Academy, but we also attempt to celebrate the Chinese
New Year.  As a schedule reminder, January 20 will follow a half day
schedule, with students dismissed at 1:00.  We hope that this will help
those families traveling to get an early start.  School will open again on
January 30 with a full day schedule.

We have moved our annual Hot Pot Day to after the Chinese New Year,
on February 9.  We look forward to this leisurely lunch and a time for
relaxed appreciation for the friendships developed at GCA. In February
we will ask students to bring an electric hot pot to school and some food
items that they particularly enjoy eating.  It is always helpful to have
Mothers visit us and prepare the meal for the students.

We will be celebrating 100 Days of School on February 1.  During the
Chinese New Year vacation, please prepare a unit of 100 items for your
child to bring to school.  This should be a fun time of interaction and light
“homework”.  Family and friends can help by counting out paper clips,
rubber bands, or lego blocks.  Special things will happen at school on that
day as well!

The cold and flu season is upon Taiwan.  Please be careful to keep your son/daughter at home when he/she is not
feeling well.  If a student is not feeling well, or has a temperature, we will call home.  Older students are sent home by
themselves, but parents of younger students will be asked to come and take their child home.  Teachers will be
understanding of the situation and will stay in touch with their students through email.  Please keep sick kids at
home!  Remember that the best defensive moves against illness are to keep your hands clean, eat healthy food and
get plenty of rest at night.

Please become involved in our annual internship program for students in grades 11 and 12.  We began the
program successfully last year, and we are looking to expand the program this year.  Students are available each
afternoon to travel to local businesses during the week of April 23-27.  If your company can provide work experience
for 2-5 of our students, please call the office and speak with Mrs. Chiang.  She will call and visit the company to discuss
the participation of our students.

Students in grade 12 at Grace Christian Academy attend a College Admissions class with Dr. Owens.  In this class
Dr. Owens has been able to oversee preparations for college admissions, such as writing a resume, gathering
references, SAT issues, and the process of finding, applying to and being accepted by a university.  In addition to the
class, recruiters and representatives from colleges occasionally visit GCA to promote their schools.  Students in grade
11 are included in these meetings so that they can become aware of the variety of programs available to them.  Some
of the question and answer sessions have been very interesting.  At least a couple times a year students in grades 9
and 10 are included, so that they can see the importance of building good study habits, maintaining  their gpa, SAT
preparation, and school/community involvement.
